Sun viewing event (arranged by Ursa Astronomical Association)

Public event for everyone interested in the Sun. You can arrive at the show at any time while it is running. No registration is required. There might be a short wait at the observatory. There is no heating inside, so please dress according to the weather. In solar viewing events, the target is our nearest star, the Sun. During the event, sunspots, flares, and eruptions become familiar. Suitable for families also.

Total lunar eclipse viewing event (arranged by Ursa Astronomical Association)

On the evening of 7 September 2025, skywatchers in Helsinki will be treated to a stunning total lunar eclipse. The event begins at 20:02, with the total phase starting at 20:30 and reaching its peak at 21:11. During this phase, the Moon will take on a dramatic deep red hue—commonly known as a blood moon. The eclipse will continue until 23:55, offering nearly four hours of celestial spectacle.

To celebrate this rare astronomical event, Ursa Astronomical Association will host two public viewing events. One on the shore of Töölö Bay, just a few dozen meters from Finlandia Hall, and the second one in Ursa’s Kaivopuisto Observatory. We warmly invite all EPSC-DPS 2025 participants to join us for this special occasion. It’s a great opportunity to meet enthusiastic amateur astronomers and local residents who share a passion for the night sky.

The Observatory of the Helsinki University Museum Flame

Dive into the atmosphere of past ages or the marvels of space at the historic Observatory. Located on Tähtitorninmäki hill at the southern end of Unioninkatu, the Observatory offers a compact exhibition that is suitably sized for a quick visit. Completed in 1834, the Observatory was the most modern astronomical research institute of its time, an example for other observatories, and served as the home of the astronomy professor and his family until 1969.

The great observation hall, the Meridian Hall, recaptures the unique atmosphere of an old astronomical observation facility with its large observation equipment still in their original places. The permanent exhibition invites visitors of all ages to get excited about the wonders of the universe. At the Observatory’s small changing exhibition “Help, climate change!”, you can learn about our planet’s changing climate.

We offer free admission to Europlanet Science Congress guests with the conference pass. The Observatory (Kopernikuksentie 1) is open Thu 12:00–20:00, Fri and Sat 12:00–16:00.
